Rituals: One Morning Turns Into an Eternity
Presented as part of Creative Director Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Rituals festival, this operatic performance explores the cycle of life. Theater director Peter Sellars joins Salonen for a journey through breath and eternity, featuring Schoenberg’s Erwartung, which depicts a woman’s hallucinatory search in the woods. The program also includes the 'Farewell' from Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), a piece where death serves as a synonym for transcendence. Between these vocal works, the orchestra performs Webern’s concise five-minute masterpiece, a gesture Schoenberg likened to an entire novel.
