For this final evening of a series destined to make history, the inventive piano of the Argentine artist Martha Argerich joins the incandescent violin of the Russian musician Maxim Vengerov in a program of three Beethoven sonatas. Published in 1799 in Vienna around the same time as the Pathétique Sonata, Violin Sonata No. 2 exemplifies the witty and humorous tone often found in Beethoven's work. Sonata No. 7, one of the most significant, was written at a turning point in the composer's life as he faced the onset of deafness; it portrays a struggle between his conquering youth and the inner drama. The final sonata, contemporary with the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies, culminates in the romantic reverie of its slow movement.
