Bwa Kayiman: Crossing the Mangrove marks the fourth chapter of a curatorial investigation into the legacy of the Haitian Revolution. Taking the historic 1791 gathering in the Bwa Kayiman forest as its starting point, the festival explores forests as venues for eco-political knowledge and resistance, with a particular focus on mangrove ecosystems. Through a diverse program of performances, dance, rituals, discussions, and music, the event addresses the ecological impacts of colonialism and the ongoing struggle for emancipation. The 2026 edition also features a special section co-curated by Berlin’s Ryūkyūan and Okinawan diaspora community, bringing together practitioners from the Caribbean, Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe to reflect on ecological responsibility.
