David Virelles: Singers Grove

Pianist and composer David Virelles presents "Singers Grove", a performance steeped in the music of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora and Western classical music. Growing up in Santiago de Cuba, Virelles organically bridges Cuban folkloric traditions with New York improvisational worlds. The performance draws from his critically acclaimed projects including "Igbó Alákorin (The Singer's Grove)", a celebration of the musical history of his hometown. This syncretic musical vision creates a personal new sound rather than a simple mixture of elements. A Guggenheim Fellow and Steinway artist, Virelles has collaborated with jazz luminaries like Henry Threadgill and Ravi Coltrane, and his solo works have consistently appeared on "Best Of The Year" lists from The New York Times and NPR.
