Modest Mussorgsky, a key figure of the Russian avant-garde in the 19th century, made music history with his unique creative power rooted in folk music. His famous Pictures at an Exhibition, originally composed for piano in 1874, became a hallmark of his work, especially through Maurice Ravel's 1922 orchestration. The program also features Night on Bald Mountain, a symphonic poem depicting a eerie scene of witches and spirits. Additionally, Béla Bartók's Viola Concerto, a lyrical yet serious work composed in his final year, 1945, is included despite being left unfinished.
