Underground, νοσταλγική βραδιά hymns
Organist Matthew Martin presents a lunchtime recital exploring how musical ideas evolve across centuries. The performance centers on two monumental works: Bach’s famous Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor and the powerful Passacaille by Swiss composer Frank Martin, which interprets Bach’s legacy through a 20th-century harmonic lens. The program also traces connections within the French organ tradition, linking Nicolas de Grigny’s Baroque settings to Gaston Litaize’s 20th-century plainchant-inspired works. The recital includes lighter English pieces and a Bach-inspired chorale prelude by Martin himself, concluding with the intricate Contrapunctus XI from The Art of Fugue.
