Mamady Kouyate is one of Guinea's better known guitarists and the heir to a long line of griots. He first made his mark as an electric guitarist in the 1970's in national bands that were part of Guinea’s campaign of Authenticité, which aimed to create an afrocentric popular sound. Kouyate eventually joined Guinea’s most famous export, Bembeya Jazz, touring with them for years. After relocating to the US in the early 2000’s, he founded the Mandingo Ambassadors as a vehicle for his own music, utilizing the classic 1970's sound of Guinea's legendary Sylliphone recordings. Every Wednesday, the group performs a set characterized by dazzling vocal and guitar patterns over a tight rhythm section.
