Goa trance emerged in the late 1980s within the psychedelic counterculture of Goa, India, evolving from a fusion of electronic body music, industrial, and acid house. Characterized by complex, layered arpeggiated synth lines and heavy use of the Roland TB-303, the genre typically maintains a fast tempo between 135 and 150 BPM. Its rhythmic structure focuses on a driving four-to-the-floor kick drum intended to induce a hypnotic, spiritual state during long-form outdoor performances. While it serves as the direct stylistic ancestor to modern psytrance, Goa trance is distinguished by its organic, melodic structures and often incorporates Eastern-inspired scales or mystical vocal samples to enhance its transcendental atmosphere.
