War metal, also known as bestial black metal, is an extreme subgenre that emerged in the late 1980s through the influence of foundational bands like Blasphemy and Beherit. It synthesizes the chaotic speed of grindcore with the abrasive textures of black metal and the down-tuned aggression of death metal to create a sound defined by relentless blast beats and wall-of-noise production. Typical instrumentation features heavily distorted, tremolo-picked guitars and guttural, often unintelligible vocals that evoke a primal and nihilistic atmosphere. Characterized by its deliberate lack of melody and focus on sheer sonic brutality, the genre maintains a strict underground aesthetic, positioning itself as the most aggressive and dissonant endpoint of the extreme metal spectrum.
