D-beat is a subgenre of hardcore punk that emerged in the early 1980s, pioneered by the British band Discharge and characterized by a distinctive, driving drum pattern known as the "Discharge beat." This high-intensity style typically features heavily distorted, wall-of-sound guitars, aggressive shouted vocals, and a relentless 4/4 rhythm that creates a sense of chaotic momentum. Lyrically and tonally, it conveys themes of nuclear war, social injustice, and nihilism, often delivered with a raw, unpolished production style that bridges the gap between traditional punk and extreme metal. As a derivative of the UK82 movement, it served as a foundational influence for the development of crust punk, grindcore, and various strands of Swedish hardcore.
