Corrosion is a specialized subgenre of industrial music that emphasizes the sonic representation of physical decay and mechanical failure through layered noise and abrasive textures. Emerging from the experimental post-industrial scenes of the late 1980s, it utilizes high-gain distortion, contact microphones on scrap metal, and extreme feedback loops to create suffocating soundscapes. The tempo is often indeterminate or features slow, crushing rhythmic pulses that evoke the feeling of a malfunctioning machine. Musically situated between power electronics and dark ambient, its mood is consistently bleak and claustrophobic, prioritizing raw textural exploration over traditional melody or structure. This genre serves as a bridge between the sheer violence of noise and the atmospheric dread of industrial.
