World music is a broad classification that emerged in the late 1980s to categorize diverse non-Western folk, traditional, and indigenous styles for global commercial markets. This expansive genre features a vast array of instrumentation ranging from traditional acoustic tools like the African kora and Indian sitar to contemporary electronic synthesizers. Its rhythmic structures often involve complex polyrhythms and non-standard time signatures that deviate from Western pop norms, creating moods that span from meditative and spiritual to high-energy celebratory. Semantically related to ethnomusicology and global folk, world music serves as an umbrella term that facilitates the cross-cultural exchange of localized musical traditions within a globalized industry framework.
