Emerging from the Renaissance lute and Baroque guitar traditions, classical guitar as a distinct genre matured during the 18th and 19th centuries with the development of the modern six-string instrument. It is characterized by the use of a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar, played primarily as a solo instrument or in chamber ensembles using intricate fingerstyle techniques. The repertoire features complex polyphony and varying tempos that prioritize expressive phrasing and rubato over a rigid percussive beat. Rooted in the Western art music tradition, the genre maintains an introspective and sophisticated mood, bridging the gap between historical European formal compositions and contemporary acoustic arrangements.
