Traditional blues emerged in the Deep South of the United States during the late 19th century, evolving from African American work songs, spirituals, and field hollers. Typically characterized by the twelve-bar progression and the AAB lyric structure, the genre relies on acoustic instrumentation such as the guitar, harmonica, and piano to convey raw, soulful narratives. Its rhythm is often slow to moderate with a steady, shuffling pulse that emphasizes emotional expression over technical complexity. As a foundational pillar of modern music, traditional blues provided the harmonic and thematic blueprint for subsequent genres including jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll.
