Never completed hemingway's novel, so i'm a bit empty on parts, but i didn't expect it to be as romantic as it is. war is almost like an everpresent storm over the characters. the real focus is frederic and catherine, two people trying to carve out a little bit of happiness. i've never been someone who gets hung up on whether an adaptation follows every page of the book, so i was happy to judge this as its own film. from what i know, borzage takes away a lot of hemingway's cynicism and leans heavily into the romance. sometimes it's too sentimental, but i can't say it didn't work on me. the movie genuinely believes that love can momentarily shut out the horrors of war, even if reality eventually catches up. (hemingway hated it), but i didn't mind the romance in a war drama. gary cooper is exactly the kind of lead this role needs. his quiet screen presence works the most here. helen hayes surprised me even more. their chemistry didn't fully sell me, but they had their moments... explosions and reminders of the chaos... how war interrupts lives and any chance at normalcy. every peaceful moment between frederic and catherine is temporary because the world refuses to leave them alone. the ending.. is too hard on the melodrama... the soft lighting and the deep shadows. charles lang is again the winner, so many shots way ahead of their time... the hospital pov especially. frank borzage could direct!
