Film Festival Munich 2025 #3People of my generation who grew up in Germany got to know South Tyrol as a part of Italy which still shares culture and language with Austria. I, as well as most others for sure, never really thought about the origin of that situation. But that is what historical films are there for, right?Zweitland (ET: A Land Within) depicts the political tensions in South Tyrol in the 60s through a well-working character constellation. The various attitudes of the people on screen helps you understand the situation's different facettes and renounces a clear statement. The moody atmosphere and precise dialogue turns Zweitland into a historical drama where you can fully immerse into the characters.Still, it has a problem that many smaller productions of this kind suffer from: A not completely authentic production design, historically speaking. Also, it had a bit more potential in terms of tension and cinematography. Zweitland is another example for a trend that seems to have risen in European cinema: Coming to terms with parts of European history that perished conpared to big ones like the two world wars. While this always feels like both a warning and a reassurance regarding current political issues at once, it certainly always is interesting to watch.
