A Touch of Spice

Are you even greek if you haven't cried on your family's couch watching this while stuffing your mouth?
I've seen a substantially low amount of Greek films and that is an error I am planning to correct in the future.I've seen roughly 30 greek comedies from the 50s but I don't remember them well enough to rate them.I started with The Ogre of Athens but it was a massive letdown as there wasn't much I liked about it.So I decided to watch the most acclaimed Modern Greek film,A touch of Spice, and it was fantastic. While not without its fair share of low budget film flaws,A touch of Spice managed to move me and get me invested emotionally in a way no other Greek film has done so far.A large attribute of what makes this film so good is the great screenplay that shows the deporation of Greeks living in Instanbul/Turkey in the mid-60s and how wrongly they were treated when they arrived in Greece, all through the eyes of this cooking obsessed kid.The composer of this film,Evanthia Reboutsika, also deserves a lot of credit as the score she created massively elevated the film and is the main reason some scenes were as emotional as they were.If you're intresting in getting into Greek cinema,A touch of Spice is a great place to start! While it has a lot more to say to someone like me who has a better understanding of what happened in that time period,I think it's a film everyone can at least enjoy because the story is pretty engaging. The bar has been set quite high for Theo!
