I felt that 2026 is a bit of a disappointing year for film, but the indie films I watched from this year certainly didn't disappoint. Abraxas is an 85-minute drama that takes some truly extreme turns before finding its way to a dignified conclusion. Charles Tyler Kinder, the film's director and lead actor, addresses themes that surely cross many people's minds from time to time. Humanity is too disconnected from the natural world, we’ve become indifferent to the Earth, yet we need to take action and make a difference rather than just engaging in mindless debate. Abraxas is a film that makes you think, something most films from 2026 failed to do for me. Not every film needs to do that, of course, but a film that prompts reflection on real life is a "real" film. Films shouldn't always just serve as entertainment, they should convey a core message or make a statement. I wouldn't claim to have fully grasped every scene of the film, but I deeply admire the artistic vision of the director, cast, and crew, it is clearly a passion project. It is hard to believe the cinematography could look so beautiful on a budget of just over $20,000. The acting is outstanding, the kind of performance usually seen from far more experienced actors, so probs to everyone involved in the project. I am certain that both Charles Tyler Kinder and Manny Liotta will achieve great success in the future, they are simply too passionate and focused on creating "authentic" cinema. Four stars is a very good rating for a great film. For me, one of the best of the year so far, even if there is not official release, yet.
