five flavours asian ff #24 // taiwanese queer cinemai'm so mad... this had so much potential, but was handled so poorly... the editing is a mess, i really wish this focused just on alifu, instead of making it an all over the place attempt at featuring three different stories. the relation of alifu's ethnicity to her gender is such an interesting topic, but it ended up being just a background for the character. please what the fuck was the rape subplot too???also what the actual fuck is the letterboxd description of this????? why does it misgender the main character the whole time? it also says sherry is a trans man while she's a trans woman?? (or did i miss something ??? because what the hell)

A film that wants to do a lot and ends up diluting its stories and message slightly in the end. It's a pity, because it has good intentions and is very heartfelt, but it could've benefited from more focus and better pacing. For how it's presented, I would've loved to see more of the indigenous tribe culture and how it impacted Alifu's life and her relationship to gender; instead, it felt too much like a backdrop to everything else. Still, the acting's great, the tone is sweet, and the soundtrack is fun. Not a perfect film but not a bad one either.
