Almost everything is amped up the second time around... more victims, more deaths, more gore, more slowmo horse riding hooded Templar death squad shots etc. One thing that doesn’t carry over from Tombs is the top notch slow and dreamy atmosphere that seems to come across as boring for many... but it makes me drool and is some of my favorite 70’s atmos. Luckily that would return in the moodier sequels. Still though.. this movie (actually the whole series) is fun, memorable, and filled with delightful visuals of hooded vengeance takers and I’m totally here for that.
I used to think I preferred this one to the first one, but they’re actually both really amazing in different ways.Like most sequels, everything in this one is extra. In the first movie, people from the city accidentally stumble onto an abandoned village and wake those dead Templar Knights. In this one, the village is actually inhabited by people who are celebrating a local holiday completely unaware that they’re about to be ass deep in said dead knights. There’s more violence, more gore, sillier characters, and more suspense. I loved the whole part in the church where everybody was safe, but most of them are so damn stupid they still manage to get killed! While I love all of the extraness in this one, it doesn’t have that surreal, ethereal atmosphere that made the first one so amazing. The atmosphere in this one is still quite good, but it’s not that same trance-inducing kind from part one. Still, given all the good stuff here, I’d say it’s a pretty fair trade. I mean, that last scene where the remaining survivors have to weave their way through the dead knights always always ALWAYS leaves me sweatin’. WHEW!The cast is wonderfully melodramatic in that special 70’s Spanish way. Tony Kendall is bell-bottomed perfection as the only person who seems capable of remaining calm while everybody else totally freaks out around him. Lone Fleming (from the first movie) plays an entirely different character here and I liked seeing the contrast. Shoutout to the mayor’s girlfriend! I can’t even tell you why but I LOVE her, especially when she’s mimicking drunk villagers while the mayor is on the phone. Awesome stuff right there. This is an excellent follow up to an excellent film and if you haven’t seen it I really need you to get on that before I have to unleash some dead Templar Knights on your ass, mmkay?Side Note: this movie has about 500 different titles but the one listed here on LB makes the most sense IMO.
Nooooooooooo don't kill her!!!She's so sexy hahaAs it happened to many, the first half in El Ataque de los Muertos sin Ojos convinced me I was gonna love this far more than the previews entry. It almost felt like John Carpenter's The Fog: a "choral" set of characters through a small town and an increasing sense of doom as the menace gets closer and closer. Faster pacing, twice the gallons of blood, skelleton horses, jelly beating hearts under latex boobs and the Knights Templar slowly approaching the village to take their revenge slaughtering half of the people in front of the Town Hall. Then the movie decides to go full Night of the Living Dead locking the few remaining characters in a church, losing all its steam (and its climax) on the way. Coitus Interruptus.Coming back from A Quiet Place: Day One last week, I began to wonder if there were any more creatures out there similar to the John Krasinski's ones, hunting only by sound but without the spider monkey looks. Forgive me, I'm a slow thinker and only now as I was watching the sequel realized I had them in front of me all along, and they're way more badass indeed! Wouldn't it be wonderful if their blindness was actually used as a key element in the plot INSTEAD OF SCREAMING AT THEIR FACES ALL THE FUCKING TIME?!?!?Literally the only time it was aknowledged as an advantage was at the very end when it was already useless. Such a unique feature to separate the Templars from any other monster should be put at the forefront, I hope that gets fixed in the last two movies.AND GOD ALMOST EVERY CHARACTER IS SO STUPID!!! They literally just had to stand one night together to survive, no need to move a single finger... AND THEY FUCKED IT UP!!! Knowing these movies weren't free from social commentary tho, probably by doing a movie with no third act that was Ossorio's intention all along, and if that's the case, man, what a master.Corpses on Horses! Ossorio's Blind Dead series, rankedAll my wasted time writing about these:• Tombs of the Blind Dead• Attack of the Blind Dead• The Ghost Galleon• Night of the Seagulls
