Monroe is pretty great in this, despite some minor accent slips, but Bo Decker has to be the most irritating character ever to appear in anything. Although the plot purports to be a romantic comedy, it's more like a horror film, watching this awful man torment and eventually break a woman while everyone else just kind of watches and lets him get on with it. ARGHHHH.
this is legitimately terrifying I’ve never been so annoyed and in distress for a female character before
as a choice i've made on purpose i'm not usually overly sympathetic to the plight of beautiful women because they get enough sympathy/love/affection/care from all corners & rarely extend the same to women who arent as privileged, but every now and then i'm removed from my carefully maintained bubble and im affected by the way misogyny impacts their lives in a way that i have never and will never experience. watching marilyn get viciously pawed by a stampeding horde of drunken oafs & then selected for marriage by one of said oafs regardless of her own wishes and desires and personhood and autonomy reminded me that physical beauty is curse as much as it is a blessing and all women are punished under patriarchy for their existing as women in women's bodies. it is not worse or harder to be beautiful, which is something beautiful women like to claim when talking about beauty & misogyny, which is why i roll my eyes and i don't give a shit about them because they dont give a shit about me, because claiming that being beautiful is the harder of the two ultimately upholds a hierarchy that already punishes and rewards women for their physical embodiment, but i know it must be hard to be beautiful in the similar (not the same) way it's hard occupying an ugly body. it must be impossible and painful and alienating to be rewarded for being beautiful, or maybe not being beautiful but existing only as beautiful and nothing more, and being turned into an object for men's pleasure. but ugly women are still objects of men's pleasure in this system, too. there is no winning. none of it is good.watching this movie as a romcom seems wrong because it's not romantic nor is it funny. it's sad. i don't know what this would pass as. seeing her settle for the scraps of affection thrown her way at the end is fucking depressing. all it takes is a meager apology and she's ready to abandon her dreams and join him on his farm. he offers his coat to keep her warm and that's enough for her. she deserves more. :(
