Gotta say I don't think this is a good movie by any means. The dialogue is stupid and the acting is pretty piss poor all round, even by legends like Laurence Olivier and Maggie Smith. Having said that, Harryhausen's practical creature effects have a specific type of charm and wonder and there's some pretty great fantasy elements to the film; the whole sequence with Medusa, for example, is enough to at least partially redeem the flaws.
In the wake of the success of Star Wars, screenwriter Beverly Cross and stop-motion FX wizard Ray Harryhausen (Jason and the Argonauts) reunite for one last handcrafted children’s adventure swan song. Unfortunately, by 1981 everyone involved outside of Harryhausen seems a little bit more bored to be making a classical sword-and-sandals Greek mythology fantasy film. Laurence Olivier looks like he was just woken up from a nap before every take. I sorta enjoy the slow, old-fashioned sincerity on display courtesy of a British TV journeyman and classic Bond cinematographer linking up, but no doubt it had to have felt dated to an audience that was watching Lucas and Spielberg skillfully put a technically modern and energetic spin on the old serials they loved. That said, I can’t have too many negative feelings about a film that contains the fiery, shadowy Medusa decapitation setpiece (which is so good I had already seen it numerous times without having seen the film in full) and Bubo the brave mechanical idiot owl—my new best friend.
