COME WHAT MAY is an engrossing documentary about the comedian Ralphie May. I remember seeing and liking May on various tv appearances. COME WHAT MAY documents May's rise and fall. The rise is depicted in the first half of the movie and is funny and inspirational. May was a superb comic and great with his fans. His fall is dark and bleak, comparable to Aronofsky's REQUIEM FOR A DREAM.May was having health problems due to his considerable weight. He had a couple of surgeries such as banding, and at one time lost an amazing amount of weight. However, his "manager" kept him on the road for a grueling amount of time. May had "assistants" who are shown procuring large amounts of junk food for him. May was also abusing a lot of pain killers and other medication. He was sleeping a good deal of the day; he literally lived for his few hours on stage. And in the later years, he was occasionally unable to give a coherent performance. Very sad.The doc features some fine interviews with his family members and celebrities such as Jay Mohr, Jay Leno, Tiffany Haddish, Bob Saget, and Jeffrey Ross. There is a brutal sequence near the end of the doc (where Ross acknowledges that they may have gone too far) where another comedian is savagely roasting May, bringing up his divorce and suggesting that he's about to die. Ross and Jimmy Kimmel are shown laughing on the dais, while May is stunned speechless. One reason I don't watch as much comedy as I used to.COME WHAT MAY is co-directed by Lahna Turner, May's former wife, and David Gantz. I was fortunate to attend a theatrical screening, where Turner introduced the film and answered questions afterwards. Several people in the audience had moving things to say about their interactions over the years with May. It was also good to hear that Turner and their two kids are doing well. She also told some horrific details about his death that I wish were included in the doc (but I can see why they weren't).
I was lucky enough to see Lahna Turner, Ralphie's widow, speak after a showing at Sarasota Film Society.Even without her presence, I would have been moved by the documentary which basically is a home movie of their relationship and Ralphie's ultimate demise.Being someone also prone to a broken wing fixation, I totally understood Lahna's Herculean efforts and charitable belief that Ralphie would indeed get healthier. His comic genius was also his ability to seduce, and was also as the film details, his survival skill.The film is truly unflinching and a testament that people are flawed, but still lovable.
