An abstract exercise in self-parody, amping up the intellectual, philosophical digressions that seem to define a certain section of art-house cinema until all that's left is near-incoherent rambling - over-emotive beings spouting mindless, densely woven monologues not so much at those who surround them, but at an imagined audience who may or may not be listening. It's all pretty hilarious, the central character an author attempting to connect all the meaningless symbols which Zulawski populates the film with, waxing poetic about everyday interactions that - in the moment - he seems utterly disconnected from. The external world is not so much an excursion into the present for these people, merely a vessel for symbolic (and obtuse) meaning, the entire film relatively ballsy in the way it gestures, pontificates and orchestrates itself not in the name of any concrete meaning, but as a means to pinpoint the falseness of this artistic obfuscation. Some might (with merit) say that this approach is fundamentally hypocritical, a strictly art-house critique of art-house cliche, but that would be missing how truly funny Zulawski's script and staging is; watching an actor recite the most utterly cliche manifesto on the art of acting whilst amping up his performance to near manic heights ranks as one of my favourite non-sequiturs of the year, as does the scene in which our lead character (who for no apparent reason is talking about Pasolini on a beach), runs into the ocean as it rains whilst exclaiming how he fears the water. Somewhere within all the madness is a certain kernel of truth, a film about the way in which we need to find order in the chaos of our surroundings, art (as absurd as it may sometimes be) just another means for humanity to organise what we still don't quite understand.
