ON THE ROAD: SWEDEN - LAND OF THE TALL, THE SOUNDS, IKEA, ABBA & THE ICE HOTELWe are staying in the camp of horror with an actual campy, tongue-in-cheek horror comedy reminiscent of films such as Popcorn, Fade to Black, and Barbarian Sound… in the sense that it pays tribute to the genre of horror all while getting very meta, silly fun, and a commentary/spoof on the whole “violence in movies and TV” and horror as a whole.Here we follow Ed, an editor who’s been asked to replace a previous editor who died of a nervous breakdown, a very fragile man but very diligent at his work. Nevertheless, he is not particularly fond of the gore aspect, so it is easy to imagine the experience of watching and rewinding all of these over-the-top gore movies. Very quickly, this takes a toll on his sanity, and he begins to suffer hallucinations and lose his mind.The acting is pretty solid. Not sure if it was because of the language barrier or some bad dubbing, but a lot of the dialogue sounds very wooden and unnatural. But it’s not that distracting. The mickey mousing and humor, though, can sometimes get way too silly and overbearing. It seems at times it's trying to go for some Raimi vibes (the boss is called Sam Campbell; I mean, that can't be a coincidence!), but it never fully hits the mark. The makeup work is incredible, though, especially the character designs. The editing, cinematography, and camerawork are also pretty good.All in all, the comedy may not be for everyone. Damn! The second half is where Evil Ed completely loses its mind in the best way possible. Johan Rudebeck's unhinged performance and the gloriously over-the-top practical gore make this cult splatter comedy a blast

Hooptober 9: It’s in Space Now “90 minutes of condensed sex and violence, do you call that a great movie?”Censor happy folks think watching gratuitous sex and violence turns people into unhinged degenerates, but this film shows the truth. They’re the ones who’ll go insane if they see a little blood and t/a. A truly pathetic group of individuals.Oh yeah, this is most certainly a satire on censorship and groups like the MPAA, who think we need to cut out all the violence in a slasher flick because what if children see this r-rated film? Dumb dumb dumb. And this film knows that too. It mocks the hell out of this “it’ll corrupt people” mindset that was so prevalent durning the “Video Nasty” days. Hell, you can still see it to this day!It’s too bad the film only has enough content for 40-50 minutes and stretches it out to 90+. But there’s plenty of wacky shit that helps grease the wheels when needed.There’s lots of gnarly gore effects including a super impressive shotgun blast to the face, lots of attractive women in tight dresses or less, a gremlin in pajamas living inside a freezer, and multiple conversations about beaver rape. All the sequences where our stick up his ass, high and mighty main character hallucinations are highlights. We get lots of neat creature designs that I could’ve done with more of. They’re all over the top and “comic-booky” with the deadite women being my favorite.The best part of the film is the climax in a hospital which was only included because they didn’t have enough footage for a full-length film. It feels like it doesn’t connect with the rest of the film but it’s full of bloody violence and mayhem so who cares?Anyways fuck censorship, films are better with sex and violence!
