My first year of highschool and this is the first film they take us to see in theatres. It was projected by the Manaki film festival and i absolutely loved it.I like how they approached Milan, Instead of the cliche more so ableist representation of autism or or overly making it sad "pathetic"(my Macedonian teachers words not mine) they showed that it's normal and u can still accommodate autistic people without overly babying them or completely ignoring them, at the start his parents are extremely infatuated with him, as i mentioned previously by babying him, when his parents are in the yard of the hospital and are finally out of their hypnosis they see him for what he is and that maybe they don't actually need to be that scared of something happening because with the right support he can actually put himself out there. The film started out with Alisa who's already annoyed and harbours slight resentment towards her family because they treat Milan like he's made of glass while not really bothering as much with her, they also kind off view her as another parent to him and it's shown in the scene where the mother goes out for more paper the way she "freaks out" over the paper and in a rush she tries to tell Alisa how to properly look after Milan while Alisa responds by telling her she already knows what to do.I don't want to add into the films narrative at the start by defining her as just another caretaker of her brother because neither he not she want that. Her character is quick-witted and slightly sarcastic, she's funny and caring...I liked this film more than i thought i did, though i went in the theatre not even knowing the name for it i walked out amazed. The film's visuals are so well thought out and always intentional with details..
Well, this is definetely not a film I thought I was going to enjoy. The director's previous work, My Grandpa Was an Alien (Moj dida je pao s Marsa), was a harmless, but very blandly put together scifi adventure that was mostly carried through by the amazing effects, the excelent performance by Ozren Grabarić and the wholesome relationship between the two leads. On the other hand Extraordinary was way better than I expected. First of all, there are its stunning visuals. I absolutely love everything about how it looks. From the set design to the fantasy sequences with the sea of lines to the clever cut-out looking transitions and, oh my God, don't get me started on the colors that POP in every single scene. It exists in its own, adorably anachronistic world that wonderfully manages to lend itself to the story, characters and overall vibes of the film. The second reason is Judita Franković, who plays a pretty minor antagonist, but still does an excelent job with the material she was given, definetely giving it all of the energy (which I only remember her doing in one of my all time favorite romcoms, 2013's Sonja and the Bull), which is saying a lot when the adult cast is as stacked as is (featuring Slavko Sobin, Željko Duvnjak, Borko Perić and even the voice of Ozren Grabarić). The child and teen cast also did a surprising amount of heavy lifting. This isn't the most mindblowing child acting I've seen, but for a family film from the Balkans, it's certainly above average. Now, there's also the aspect I was the most worried about, that being the autistic representation, as Croatian cinema doesn't exactly have the best track record for neurodivergent rep (take, for example, the characters of Filip in Arsen Anton Ostojić's F20 or Musa in Krsto Papić's Handcuffs), but color me surprised, this wasn't half that bad and managed to capture many of the aspects of living as a neurodivergent individual with some surprising believability, which makes me very happy as an autistic person myself. Now, I do feel like the ending was way too abrupt and the whole storyline with the social worker duo felt very underdeveloped, which prevents me from giving the film a 5, but, overall, it was cute and managed to beat almost all of my expectations. And I couldn't be happier for it.
