CW: sexual harassment, sexual assault first of all, please please read selma hayek's words about the making of this film here.some things that stood out to me: "He made me doubt if I was any good as an actress, but he never succeeded in making me think that the film was not worth making...He would let me finish the film if I agreed to do a sex scene with another woman. And he demanded full-frontal nudity." "My body began to shake uncontrollably, my breath was short and I began to cry and cry, unable to stop, as if I were throwing up tears...It was not because I would be naked with another woman. It was because I would be naked with her for Harvey Weinstein."the idea that harvey weinstein corrupted a film for his fantasy when it should have been a film that truthfully told a story of a queer woman is so infuriating. selma is an incredibly gifted artist, and an incredibly strong woman. i'm so angry that women's stories are undervalued and women themselves are abused. what should be a feminist film is almost tainted by the abuse the female director and lead actress/producer went through. my review:there's so much to love here: flowers, surrealism, embroidered pillows, paint-streaked faces, good food, body hair, candlelight, women loving women, chunky jewelry, alcohol, pain, love. but– WHY WAS THERE SO MUCH DIEGO RIVERA?? the choice to frame this story as a love story between diego and frida is frustrating. he's such a huge part of frida's life; he influenced her art, and caused her so much pain. but at times in this film so much of her narrative was warped by his choices, to the point where we view her story through him rather than it being fully her's. it's not surprising this film doesn't pass the bechdel test, as so many of the conversations between the women are about diego. this is so so frustrating because this could have been a truly great biopic. the style, tone, and acting are fantastic, but major story choices really worsened this film. what do you call a portrayal of a woman as not a muse but not quite a subject in her own right? all the best scenes are not the ones between the couple, but rather when frida is painting, dancing, singing, expressing her pain, and being frida kahlo!!!!!! it makes me want to cry because i love frida kahlo so much and there is so much good here, but this choice to make diego so much of the focus makes me incredibly disappointed. 4 stars for salma hayek's incredible performance, the painting scenes, the dance scene, and the accurate focus on frida's art, politics, disability, and sexuality.
