Akin finally letting loose, and just accepting that hyperschmaltz is his genre. his stylistical flaws (especially his atrocious acting guidance, in combination with the terrible ADR work in the post), and general leaning into artificiality on the visual level makes sense for the megakitsch that Geister is. leads to this - maybe sadly - ranking in the top 3 of his oeuvre.although this won't go into my personal worst of the festival top 10, it does have the singular most disgraceful scene of the whole paltry edition (the phone call on the tower), so there's at least that 'win' for the film. funny though how Akin just misses the underlying themes (suicidal ideation, imagination & projection etc) so blatantly, of course because a leopard can't change his mushy, cheesy spots.~ Hamburg 34 ~
