A Walk Amongst Monsters #69“Godzilla is crying”This is it. The end of the road for the Heisei era. One of the films I was most looking forward to revisiting. The one where they kill Godzilla.That’s no spoiler, the tagline for this is literally “Godzilla Dies!”. The film gained international attention due to that fact. After the film came out Toho would be swarmed with letters begging for Godzilla to resurrected. For a film that was so heavily tied to a single plot point, they didn’t skimp on the rest of the film and produced what I believe to be the best Godzilla film of all time.Godzilla is beginning to meltdown as his heart, a mini nuclear reactor, has been overflowed with too much nuclear energy. As he comes closer to death, the earth comes closer to oblivion. If he explodes or melts down he’ll cause unimaginable devastation to the world. So it’s a race against time as everyone scrambles to find a way to mitigate this horrifying outcome.At the same time a Precambrian microorganism is discovered that’s been mutated by the Oxygen Destroyer, the device used to defeat Godzilla 40 years ago. Unfortunately for everyone it keeps evolving into bigger and more dangerous forms. Eventually this being, dubbed Destoroyah, goes head to head with the suped-up and dying Godzilla as it might be the only thing that can stop him.Burning Godzilla is a legendary design. His Heisei look is made more terrifying as his insides glow red. His eyes and dorsal fins also take on a red tint. His body constantly releases steam as his insides rapidly melt. This Godzilla is in constant pain and it shows. Even his iconic blue atomic breath has changed to an intense red. Top tier stuff.Destoroyah might be the coolest Godzilla villain. Outside of the fact he’s the living embodiment of the device that originally destroyed him, he looks evil as fuck. He starts out as many actually. A swarm of crablike spider/scorpions that blast micro-oxygen beams that obliterate everything. Then he gets a flying form that’s pretty dope. Which leads to his final form, a gigantic Devil straight from hell. A massive, winged hell beast with claws protruding out of his legs and an axe blade for a head. He’s got a tail with pincers and a horn that he can use as an energy blade. What a creature he is.Little Godzilla has become Godzilla Junior and looks like Godzilla in his teenage years. He’s still so small but now he can actually fight. He goes toe to toe with Destoroyah before his dad even gets there. He’s horribly outmatched but he holds his own and gets some good hits in. He also gets his chest cavity ripped open, covering Destoroyah’s face in blood which is a dope shot.This film is directly tied to the original Godzilla. Fitting as this would be the last for the era. You’ve got main characters that are the descendants of people from that film, Momoko Kochi reprises her role from the original, footage from the film is used, it’s all used as a fitting send off for Godzilla. Something I never noticed is how this film opens the same way as the original. In both we hear Godzilla’s footsteps and roar before the film begins. Even when they show the title card, It’s done the same as the original displaying Godzilla’s name in white against a black backdrop before morphing into the full title.This would be the last film Akira Ifukube would score, retiring after its release. His score elevates an already phenomenal film. He passed away in 2006. As it was the big finale for the Heisei era we get a massive showdown that lasts the last 40 minutes! It’s so long it starts in the day and ends during the night. It begins with Godzilla Junior facing off against Destoroyah before Godzilla shows up to take it into high gear. The fight takes place in Tokyo and they absolutely demolish it. The damage caused during this fight is catastrophic to say the least. Buildings are simply objects for these titans to batter each other with. It’s nice and violent too. Godzilla is sliced up by Destoroyah’s horn blade and Godzilla returns the favor by ripping open his stomach! Cue lots of Kaiju gore spewing everywhere.The entire film looks great but a personal favorite shot is when Destoroyah emerges as his final form. It’s a massive explosion and a ball of fire rises as we see his wings jutting out before we see his full form. He really does look like he’s from hell in that shot.There’s an entertaining homage/ripoff of Aliens in the middle of this too. When Destoroyah is still in their swarm form a group of soldiers fight them in a building. It’s not subtle, the soldiers weapons attach at their waists and their carrying motion detectors and flamethrowers. It’s a lot of destructive fun and it’s cool to see a Kaiju fight brought down to the human level.The final minutes of the film are perfect. Godzilla begins to meltdown as the military do everything they can to reduce the cataclysm. He’s illuminated by the weapons firing at him and the extreme amounts of radiation he’s releasing, a brightness surrounded by the night sky. The noise fades out as Akira Ifukube’s angelic score swells. We bear witness to the end of an icon and I’ll be damned if I didn’t get teary eyed again. It’s one of the best scenes in cinematic history, topped off with a truly perfect final shot.It might be my favorite ending to any film.The end credits show Godzilla’s evolution from the original to this as a final sendoff. I’ve been writing this review for almost an hour and I still feel like it’s not good enough. This film is my childhood, my favorite Godzilla film, a film I rewatched constantly. It defined me as a kid just like it does now. Goodbye Godzilla, you’ll never truly be dead.
Starts with the traditional slow build, even mixes in some flashbacks to the OG Toho jam while adding a few horror flourishes/Aliens-like corridor shootouts with mini Destoroyah xeno-kaiju’s before erupting into a megaton monster mash showdown with reactor heart Godzilla on the verge of total meltdown—also this movie is totally capable of tugging on heart strings and almost had me in tears at the end which was VERY unexpected and one of the biggest surprises of my movie watching life. Better than any of the new incarnations and all of their millions of dollars of cgi—people who scoff at men in suit monster movies must lead the most boring, miserable, and insufferable lives. What a send off.
