Her Brother

Criterion Channel, film #15This very stark drama showed that in the 1920s, women had a certain role in society. The film showed the brother's irresponsibility. Despite the fact that the sister had a head on her shoulders, it was a man's world. Vegan alert:-A horse is whipped. -The horse is shown in so much pain that a veterinarian is called.-Pork, fish cake, and prawns are offered.
What an incredible looking film! The use of 'scope and a faded color palette is quite impressive. The fact that it's directed by Kon Ichikawa and shot by Mizo alum Kazuo Miyagawa is all one needs to know. I also loved how the music is employed in the film. It's a moving tale about the weight of familial obligations. Ichikawa doesn't show much sympathy toward the mother and father, played by the legendary actors Kinuyo Tanaka and Masayuki Mori. The relationship between the kids (Keiko Kishi and Hiroshi Kawaguchi) is truly quite complicated, but Ichikawa keeps us emotionally involved.
This comes from the opposite end of Kon Ichikawa’s filmography as Princess from the Moon (the other part of my double feature) - his most fertile and acclaimed period shortly after the double punch of Burmese Harp and Fires on the Plain. By comparison to Princess, Her Brother is a slight drama, but packs far more of an emotional punch. Keiko Kishi plays Gen, the responsible daughter in a close but completely dysfunctional family. Her father is utterly useless other than as an occasional paycheck, her stepmother is a passive-aggressive religious invalid, and her younger brother, well, Hekiro (Hiroshi Kawaguchi) is just a problem. He’s her Johnny Boy, lovable but a delinquent who constantly causes trouble and wastes the family’s resources, and that’s before his story takes an unexpected turn towards high drama. Her Brother can occasionally be maudlin, and Kishi looks like she’s 20 going on 35, but the film is anchored by strong performances all around, and one of the best family dinner fights I’ve seen since Hereditary.
