I saw this movie once before, in the year 2012, when I was 23. I watched it in 20-minute nightly increments on my laptop before falling asleep in my cheap hotel room in Paris. So I will always associate Greydon Clark’s Joysticks with visiting Paris, but now I will also associate it with Toronto’s legendary Kingsway Theatre, where tonight I saw a faded 35mm print. It was a rare thrill to see Joe Don Baker’s beautiful mug fill up a 40-foot cinema screen.This heroically stupid titty comedy presents its video arcade setting as a joyously democratic space where chads, nerds, valley girls, burnouts, and even old people coexist in peace and harmony. There are a lot of gags, and maybe 2% of them are funny, but I choose to look at the glass as 2% full. Joe Don commits to his role as John Vernon in Animal House, which is very admirable considering how acutely aware he must have been of what a comedown this was from his ‘70s heyday.The theme song, a total earworm, was the only thing I remembered from that first viewing in Paris all those years ago, and I remembered it almost note for note.

Not every joke/gag lands (most, in fact, don't), but at least there's a title dropping theme song, an arcade game training montage and tons of boobies.I had a blast watching Joysticks with Michelle.
