"Enough is enough."The more international films you watch the more clear it becomes that the whole world is in similar turmoil and that WWIII is an economic one that has been quietly waged against average citizens for the last few decades. We all need to stop enduring, just barely getting by, and band together so we can fight back.Sundance #20
i was so excited for this one, and am so bummed to be left disappointed. the film started out strong, but pretty much lost me in the second half. i felt like i kept waiting to actually spend quality time with the sex worker characters, and then suddenly the movie was over and i had barely gotten to know them at all. i walked away feeling pretty frustrated, considering how the film has been marketed as so female-centric and female empowering…and yet, how underdeveloped these female characters were (even pinky, who still felt like a mystery to me despite the actor’s phenomenal performance). many narrative decisions felt vague and half-baked (the relationship with iya, lady’s past with her mother, the fuel subsidy and corruption protests). the big violent climax scene on the beach, apart from being poorly lit, came out of nowhere, then disappeared just as quickly, glossed over as if it wasn’t important or necessary — which it really wasn’t. most harrowing of all, the ending scene forcefully reminded me of the kendall jenner pepsi commercial. there were some great elements (the absolutely mesmerizing mansion scene in the middle of the film; the incredible score; the potent love for lagos, and all of its vibrancies and shortcomings, that pours out undiluted and dripping with color from every frame of the film). but overall i felt the story never found its footing after the first act. sundance 2026 day 1, world premiere, screening #3
Such a wonderful way for me to kick off Sundance this year! This Lagos-based movie is such an intimate look into the world of hustle culture, especially for Black women. In a heavy patriarchal society, of course, the hustling most related to women's bodies and that men typically do not partake in unless they are a customer are seen as less than. Living in a world where Black women are consistently put at the bottom of heirarchy, it is refreshing to not see the representation leaning towards crabs in a barrel, but rather a strengthening of lost sisterhood. The use of color is extremely attractive, and as this film takes place through a politically heightened time in Lagos, we learn when enough is enough.
