Watching films like Landscape in the Mist is the main reason why I love this site so much. I don't remember the exact circumstances that led to my viewing of this film, but I know that without Letterboxd I never in a quadrillion years would of ever discovered that this film, or any similar to it (such as Tarkovsky's films), even existed. It's truly a beautiful thing.
The fog swallows the scenes.A road that does not end, only disappears into silence. Two children walk, small, fragile, carrying the rumor of a father who may never exist. The pilgrimage is not to him, but to the wound of his absence.Silence governs them. I do not mean the gentle silence of sleep, but an oppressive silence, distant, faceless, inflexible.Absent parents, authority off-screen, history weighing like an invisible hand. The world speaks only through pauses, through the void between words.Innocence is very brief. It shatters in shadows, in ellipses. Trauma arrives with no warning, its echo louder than the act itself. The camera insists not on the violence, but on what follows: faces turned away, a motionless body, the weight of memory settling like ash.Stations, roads, ports, spaces without shelter, stripped of intimacy. Greece as corridor, as waiting room, as an endless threshold. The theatre troupe passes by, worn and diminished, allegory of a nation repeating its lines to an absent audience. And, still, myth erupts. A marble hand breaks the surface of the sea, with a broken finger and an incomplete gesture. The fog covers the horizon, erasing directions. At the end, a tree; fragile, solitary, offered like scripture without affirmed interpretation. Not salvation, but the mere possibility of roots. This is not a film of liberation. To seek easy empathy is to misunderstand it. The children are not sentimental figures, they are reflections of a society that abandons its most harmless. Angelopoulos withholds emotion with no intention to be cruel, but to show cruelty itself, the cold machine of a world that refuses to care. And so two figures keep walking, small against the fog, against history, still searching, always searching.“Sometimes on my way home from school I think I hear footsteps behind me, your footsteps, and when I turn to look there's no one. Then I feel very lonely. We don't want to be a burden to you. We just want to get to know you and then we'll go away again”
