"Come on, teach me. Are you afraid? You're right. Because they're all dead. All my teachers."The awkward silence after Jimmy comes is a fantastic moment of cinema. This movie is a neon new wave fever dream where gender and sexuality are under assault. Outsiders and weirdos and freaks and faggots and addicts and predators converge and explode. Nothing is safe, not sex, not drugs, not fashion, not Connecticut, not fairytales, not the media industry, not the myth of New York City. Sleaze and frost, androgyny and sex, psychedelic alien sight, it's all a dirty, angsty poem inspired by a subculture that could never live up to this vision. It's about the hard lessons learned from being used and the power of vengeance through bodily empowerment/vaginal murder. Let's paint ourselves electric and embrace our orgasmic deaths.
This film, and Dr. Caligari, are the two films that I felt the most supremely defined by in my formative years. They are the original 'Neon Boogers'. Liquid Sky remains one of the most visually interesting films I've ever seen and stands as a model by which I compare all movies. In this long overdue revisit I was lucky enough to see it in 35mm at Cinefamily. I noticed lots of little glowy details that may have been lost on my many vhs views. In the Q&A Production/Costume Designer Marina Levikova said that her wardrobe budget was only $500. I did the math and that's about $1200 now (that includes the cost of paying her assistants). She went around to all of the thrift stores buying crazy colorful clothes, cut them up and reconstructed "high fashion" costumes WITH GAFF TAPE! This woman is my hero. Performances by Anne Carlisle and Paula E. Sheppard are as potent as ever. I can't imagine a world without Liquid Sky, hell I can't even imagine a ME without Liquid Sky. While the hardened vitriol of drug use and violence are certainly present my memory will always reflect fluorescent brush strokes, alien soundscapes and an androgynous beauties.
An alien creature invades New York's punk subculture in its search for an opiate released by the brain during an orgasm.
Slava Tsukerman directed the 1982 sci-fi cult classic, known for its distinct neon-soaked portrayal of the Manhattan art scene.
