A few weeks ago, somewhere deep within the bowels of Letterboxd, I made a comment below someone's review of Miller's Crossing where I said that I wouldn't be surprised if, were they to ever come up with a scientific theory regarding what makes the perfect film, Miller's Crossing turned out to be that perfect film.For years I was pretty convinced that Fargo was my favourite Coen Brothers film. Even though I remembered thinking Miller's Crossing was great and loving Blood Simple, No Country For Old Men and Raising Arizona as well, there wasn't much doubt about that. A few months before I joined Letterboxd (BLE - Before the Letterboxd Era, as it should now be called) I gave Miller's Crossing another watch.I watched it in the grip of crippling stomach pains, something I suffered with on and off for over a year. Whenever I had them I always found it difficult to concentrate on anything, try as I might. The only thing that tended to work were sport clips on YouTube for some reason, and trying to concentrate on a film was certainly out of the question - my mind could not handle it.Miller's Crossing was the exception, though. I don't even know why I thought I would be able to get through it in the first place, but not only did I do that but I came to the realisation that this is certainly one of the best films that I've ever seen, definitely my favourite by the Coens, and in at the very least one or two ways a perfect film.I just absolutely adore the style of it more than anything else, I think. I do occasionally wonder if that is because I really wish everyone still wore hats and dressed as smartly as they do here. Not that I walk around Manchester dressed like Gabriel Byrne's Tom Reagan, you understand. Tolerant city though it may be in many ways, but dressing like a period movie gangster is behaviour that is asking for a pasting.But I can't help but feel that I would enjoy trips to Sainsbury's or sojourns on the tram a lot more if everyone dressed like they do in Miller's Crossing. I just love the look of everyone and everything in this film - so much so that I sometimes I forget how much I have loved Jon Polito in every single one of his collaborations with the Coens, and how fantastic an actor Albert Finney is (one of the primary reasons to be a proud Mancunian), and how incredible the showdown in the woods between Gabriel Byrne and John Turturro is.Like I say, I'm quite convinced that this film could be scientifically proven to be perfect. Even if I'm wrong, after I'd finished watching Miller's Crossing, my stomach pains were all but gone. Science may not be able to prove its perfection but I'm here to tell them that it cures a bad gut.
