What’s lovely about this movie is there is no miracle on 34th Street — at least not an overt one (unless you count Macy’s encouraging its customers to shop at other department stores if they don’t stock the item they want). Kris Kringle may be Santa Claus; nothing in the film rules that out. But by design, nothing conclusively proves he is the real Santa either. He might just be a delusional old man. Even the last shot, meant to suggest a divine presence, can be easily explained without any supernatural shenanigans — it’s basically just a Rorschach test for the audience.So what do you believe? It’s easy to believe in magic and miracles when a reindeer flies right in front of you, as in so many lesser Christmas films. Faith demands belief in something you cannot see. So the real miracle, if this movie does its job, happens in the viewer’s heart.
