RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOLON THE ROAD - LE STRADE ITALIANE: PASTA, GRANDE IMPERO E LA TERRA DEI MIEI ANTENATIA somewhat quiet film about a man who self-exiled to Egypt after a robbery went wrong and returns 40 years later to find his hometown changed—probably not for the better. As I mentioned, this is a quiet drama where a lot seems to happen, yet the film refuses to shout its story. Danger lurks around almost every corner; just when something beautiful appears, something wrong and deadly follows. That ending hit like a gut punch, but it felt perfectly fitting. All the performances are solid, much like the film itself—mostly understated. There are no loud or grand moments where actors showcase their range dramatically. Favino makes a compelling protagonist, conveying his complex emotions through simple gestures. You can occasionally sense a man wrestling with deep guilt. The only reason I hesitate to give it a higher rating is that it feels a bit too long. A few minutes trimmed could have tightened the pace. Also, films like this require a specific mindset—one I wasn’t quite in at the moment for personal reasons. All in all, it’s a solid drama supported by a strong performance. As some have noted, it’s less a crime drama and more a reflection on reality, illustrating how closure is sometimes impossible in this harsh world. Also check out my ranking of the Best Italian movies from the 2000sON THE ROAD - LE STRADE ITALIANE: PASTA, GRANDE IMPERO E LA TERRA DEI MIEI ANTENATITODAY SCHEDULELa StradaNostalgiaBig Deal on Madonna Street

A reviewer said that this Italian arthouse drama gave off major Hong Kong vibes, so obviously I had to check it out. Having now seen Nostalgia, I have to say that I agree with him. For me, the most important reason why is because the city where the story takes place in (Naples) really comes to life. My favourite Hong Kong movies are the ones where the city is a character on to itself. Then there is the "two (former) friends on opposite sides of the law" character dynamic that we have seen in countless Southeast Asian crime thrillers. There is no heroic bloodshed element to any of this here of course. Nostalgia is not that kind of movie. It's more a deliberate drama that steadily builds tension.I loved how the flashbacks scenes were employed to shine light on the duo's backstory, and I also loved the little moments of tenderness sprinkled throughout the movie (the mother-son bathing scene, however sad, was beautiful).Highly recommend.
