A young singer’s (Demi Moore) beach property becomes prey for greedy land developers. Hoops McCann (John Cusack) and a group of idiots and misfits come to her aid. This one could be called Better Off Dead Beach Party because much of the cast of Savage Steve Holland’s excellent cult comedy return. Joel Murray (God Bless America), Bobcat Goldthwait (back when he used to talk in that annoying as fuck voice) and Curtis Armstrong (Booger from Revenge of the Nerds) play the various misfits. Jeremy Piven plays one of the douchey bad guys, which is okay because he’s kinda like that in real life. This one was a big favorite of many teenagers back in the 80’s due to its constant rotation on cable. It was often played by side with Better Off Dead, which is definitely the better of the two.Although it’s moronic and many jokes fall flat, this one has a real charm to it. It’s about as 80’s as you can get and all that sunny retro can be a lot of fun in our dark times. It’s fun seeing practically baby versions of Demi Moore (she sings….badly) and Cusack. Behind the scenes, Cusack hated the director. He even said he had ruined his career. I’m really not sure why he did both movies if he felt this way. Also, how could he not see the tone of this film from the screenplay? Last I heard, he had lightened up about it considerably, but didn’t talk to Holland for about 30 years over it.Recommended, if this is your sort of thing and you’re looking for something mindless.
Oh Savage Steve...laugh me away from this harsh 2020 existence.
A teenager with dreams of being a cartoonist travels to Nantucket for the summer and teams up with a group of friends to save a local singer's family property from greedy land developers.
It was directed by Savage Steve Holland, an American filmmaker known for his distinctive absurdist humor in 1980s teen comedies.
