Okay, so I was lowkey terrified this pick was gonna totally tank for our Sunday night stream at Slasher Society! 😱 It’s so obscure that I thought everyone would hate it, but unearthing this lost tape proved to be the opener we needed to kick off our horror comedy night! 🩸✨💀🎟️ THE PREMISE:We are stepping back in time to Austin, TX in 1991 with this ultra obscure indie gem that was hidden from the masses until being rediscovered in the 2010's (much to John Hawkes dismay I'm sure). Imagine the chilly, crisp autumn air biting at your lips, the overpowering stench of fog machines, and the sweet scent of candy apples heating under carnival lights.Enter Warren Kilpatrick 🥹—played by a young pre-Oscar-nominee John Hawkes! Warren is an anxiety ridden basketcase, practically dripping with sweat and awkwardness, who gets dragged to a local carnival haunt on Halloween night. The twist? A psychotic mental patient just escaped nearby. As the lights dim inside the spooky maze, Warren's hyperventilating brain goes into full blown panic. Is an actual killer stalking him through the props and rubber snakes, or are his "friends" and paranoia taking over?💀🎟️ THE GOOD:1.) Talk about an absolute love letter to the Halloween season! It perfectly nails that 90s Midwest haunt nostalgia that hits me right in the feels. As a former teen haunt kid who basically got paid to play dress up and jump out of dark corners, the backstage goofing off felt so real. The film is hokey, dripping in cheesy camp, and an absolute scream—basically a guaranteed hit if you ever spent your childhood going to local carnivals or worked behind the scenes scaring people for a living! 🩸👻2.) And as Marci iconicly put it: "Warren's just getting harassed #justiceforwarrenkilpatrick"!!💀🎟️ THE BAD:Let’s keep it real—it’s an ultra low budget 16mm Texas indie, so you have to calibrate your expectations accordingly!💀🎟️ THE VERDICT:</V>It’s spooky, it’s stupid, and it’s an absolute blast!!🎡🎢 🎠This was our third week of hosting a Sunday Night Stream with the Slasher Society! I'm glad that, though I knew of this movie, I had no idea it takes place on Halloween. If I had, I would've likely saved it and then I wouldn't have it to cheer me up now. 😱I love how you get further and further into this haunted house SOV vibe like 'hey guys, remember the time we all went to the haunted house' only the memory of it is right there, in someone's baement, waiting for you to find the right tape, not just how it looked, removed and 'is that really me' but how the night felt. 😱As the movie progresses, you are less sure anything about it is fake. It's a dream about a monkey's paw of an eternal Halloween party you wish you had never, ever asked for. 😱And at one point a cop, noticing a cat has snuck into his squad car thru the window he left open swears, dumping it unceremoniously out the window. I died.😱The Halloween aesthetic here is grimy, almost squashed looking, something I was unaware I needed in my life but now, can't imagine living without.😱Early on, you see Warren sitting far away from the party, next to a glowing jack-o-lantern. That is me at any party, basically.'Christmas is too expensive. Thanksgiving's for turkeys. Easter's for anyone who believes rabbits lay eggs. But Halloween...'This is my favorite Halloween movie ever.

Fun, odd, weird little regional horror movie I’ve known about for years and finally got a chance to watch thanks to Arrow’s streaming channel!It’s set on Halloween and I keep thinking I’ve run out of decent Halloween set movies, but here we are and it hasn’t happened yet!John Hawkes is too adorable as the most terrified guy that’s ever lived. I really think he made the movie by delivering a beautifully weird and endearing performance. It takes a little too long to get going and it’s still kinda slow when it does, but the end is a real treat. What can I say? I’m a sucker for regional horror with a cute nerdy lead, especially if it has that delicious late 80’s/early 90’s vibe.
