Having gotten its point across about the consequences of witnessing and becoming acclimated to violence and sensationalism, about 45 minutes in this decides to use that as a springboard for a bonkers chase movie complete with psychic powers, ghosts that shoot laser beams, and characters going inside the dang TV set. What a blast.
78Wes Craven's enthusiasm holds no bounds. This is such a audacious premise that consistently switches gears, always uncovering a new idea or concept on the way. Very funny and creative. Television not just as a portal but a separate dimension - how the wavelength of the world is primarily given life through images. It's only when we turn it off that we see the stars.
Shocker might be a little ridiculous, campy, and a mess... but I dunno... this movie might’ve been an attempt at starting a new franchise but is fun as hell and has quite a bit of heart (that goes a long way for me) to it… plus I think Horace Pinker is awesome. No stranger to dreams, Craven fuses together some of his signature ideas and for the most part it works despite feeling a little long at times... almost like two movies squeezed into one while being weighed down by an absolutely dull peter berg. Good news is there's Mitch Pileggi--who gets to go full crazy as loony psycho serial killer Horace Pinker! There's a few neat dream sequences, a lot of throat slits, and the effects are pretty neat too (lol @ ghost girlfriend). There's such a specific late 80's vibe going on here (my fav kind of vibe) that hooks me every time... movies like this, Prison, The Horror Show, and Destroyer land riiiight in my wheelhouse... that 87-93 timeline has my favorite ‘often hated but loved by me' movies that (at this point in my life) i would rather watch a thousand times over any late 90's post Scream meta offering.I think this is a WAY better Elm Street movie than that years NOES 5: The Dream Child, and to be honest I kinda wish we got a Horace Pinker franchise as long as Peter Berg stayed far away from it lol.HORACE PINKER LIVES!
