Don't get me wrong this is undeniably well acted with a spectacular performance from Sam Neil but this just isn't for me. It was a total slog to get through as I didn't particularly care for the plot, definitely more something my dad would enjoy. I'm curious to find out how this landed on the 1001 films you've got to see before you die list.
July Film Log“You bastards, you bastards.”While I wasn’t completely blown away by Sleeping Dogs from a narrative perspective (certain sections either bored me or were too silly), it makes up for it with just the right amount of intensity and personality in its thematic presence, while boasting nicely shot direction by Roger Donaldson and an engaging, breakthrough performance from Sam Neill.The presentation from arrow video is a highlight you can’t go wrong with their restoration. Political action thriller from New Zealand about a man who, after splitting from his wife, seeks solitude on a little island in Coromandel. His peace is shattered when he somehow ends up getting dragged into a revolution. Well, no man is an island I guess. The film is based on the book Smith's Dream and presumably has something to say about the political climate in New Zealand at the time (I can't comment as I wasn't there). The story is still of interest - seemingly the main character can't escape from politics even if he pays no attention to it and actually hides away on an island. How depressing! It's the first starring role for Sam Neill and he's one of the best things about the film. The plot really does lack a coherent structure, and sometimes even borders on farce - which keeps things interesting as it's never really clear where it's going; but it can be a bit plodding at times. There's some good action peppered throughout and the film is never restrained too much by the obvious lack of budget. There's some memorable scenes and certainly the film is worth seeing - though at the end my main concern was what happened to the dog?!March Around the World 2021 Challenge #1/30 - New Zealand
