Miraculous. Mind-boggling. Masterful. Other M-words.first off, this is a very well-done recording. there's a solid balance of "stage view" and close-ups on the actors, whose performance are excellent. it was genuinely a little surreal to see the girl playing Chihiro capture the essence of an animated character so well.in my experience, many of the other "animated film adapted to stage play" projects often have to trim down the story or simplify various scenes because certain effects or setpieces are just too difficult to translate to the stage. that's not the case here. this offers almost the exact same experience as watching Spirited Away, the only difference being that while on film you're marveling at the creativity of the animation, on stage you're marveling at the ingenuity of the production. good stagecraft is one of my favorite things in the world. the variety of locations, characters, and sequences achieved here with turntables, small puppets, gigantic puppets, infrequent projections, miniatures, dancing, singing, and other smoke/light effects is insane. particularly, I was impressed with the ways that the show translates some of the "cinematic language" of the film into live performance; the scene where Haku runs with Chihiro and the background blurs behind them, for instance, is achieved here with a cast of performers each holding doors and spinning them as he runs. it's hard to even describe how well some of these effects work; there's even some forced perspective and turning/moving setpieces that simulate the movement of a camera.contrary to my frequent anti-live-action-remake diatribes, I think this is proof that animated films can be adapted to a new medium with creativity and spirit; in fact, this is how it should be done. so many live-action remakes strip the creativity out of the original piece by simply re-rendering the original movie with 4K photoreal visuals. on the other hand, good stage adaptations increase the creativity by introducing problem solving; how do we bring that to life on stage with real people? where a live-action remake might resort to CGI, a stage adaptation must find new ways to provoke the imagination and elicit the feeling of the original with new materials, puppets and interpretive ensemble performers among them. it's passion incarnate, capturing the ethos of the original film while also offering a new and magical experience, and I left the theater full of awe and wonder. go see it while it's still playing a few more times!
