Whoa... the website I write for and helped launch with a bunch of friends just won the silver bolo award on the last drive in with Joe Bob! Congrats to Ryan and everyone else involved. As for the movie, I don’t subscribe to the frothing at the mouth VS fanboy love for Spookies but it does have some great effects and cool looking monsters. It’s a decent slice of meddled production 80’s lore that I’d probably like more if I wasn’t sober lol.
This title almost sounds like a breakfast cereal and maybe should be treated as much as a horror film. It's not that it doesn't have it's charm but really is far too campy with a narrative that zips up faster then a parka in an Edmonton snowstorm that has you questioning "Did we need all these elements to tell this story?". So I don't want to trash on this too much because I honestly feel that it was made with an enthusiasm with some solid effects and makeup... at times and when they didn't I found it weird that they focused on showcasing clearly rubber masks with no cut away. We also have a cast that runs a gamut of ages and would never be friends entering a cemetery house that would be there undoing. So much of this film is farcical and I can't tell if it was structured on the back end with editing or was what they wanted to feature with the material. There could have been something here if tuned up and I applaud some of the craftsmanship in certain grotesque effects but honestly it's kind of a dud and maybe a film to watch for it's so bad it's good aesthetic.
A group of travelers takes a wrong turn and finds themselves trapped in a mysterious mansion, where they must survive a series of supernatural encounters orchestrated by a sorcerer seeking immortality for his bride.
Spookies was directed by Genie Joseph, Thomas Doran, and Brendan Faulkner in 1986.
The film gained a reputation due to its bizarre production history, where an unfinished movie titled Twisted Souls was heavily edited and combined with new, unrelated footage, resulting in a disjointed but creature-heavy experience.
