Check your I Saw the TV Glow-inspired expectations at the door because Jane Schoenbrun has once again proved themselves as an endlessly versatile filmmaker who knows what interests them but creates something wholly unique every time. So much of this is because of the autobiographical nature of their work, they have talked for a while about pivoting after TV Glow to make a film about finding joy in sex after transition, and the way they use the artifice of 80s slasher aesthetics and IP resurrection as a vehicle to explore that is somehow as beautiful and cathartic as it is hilarious and cheeky. So fun to watch them have so much fun after the heaviness of their previous work. There’s so much to discover here. Gillian Anderson is such a powerhouse. Split diopter alert 😌😌

TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA is one of the sharpest and best deconstructions of the slasher genre I’ve ever seen. Campy, sexy, bloody, and deeply attuned to why these films have long served as a sexual awakening for generations of viewers, Jane Schoenbrun masterfully crafts something that is personal, gorgeous, hypnotic, wholly unique, and not easily identifiable. With reverence for the genre’s past while carving out their own singular voice in conversation with their previous two films, Schoenbrun defiantly pushes against what Hollywood typically demands from the horror genre, even as it embraces the pleasure that audiences seek from it. Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson are absolute perfection together, and soundtrack is filled with nothing but bangers!
