What a delightfully absurd little bit of 70’s horror cinema. Like the kind that could only come from the 70’s. A social worker trying to rescue an adult “baby” from its family because she thinks he’s being abused?! Like there is no way that could be made today because it wouldn’t even be a thing! Like the opening scene would be CPS coming in and taking man-baby away and that’s the whole movie. Or maybe the plot would be mostly man-baby’s family fighting to get him back. It just would t be anything like the movie we have here, but that’s what I love about the 70’s.Ruth Roman is also the brightest part of this gem for sure. Her voice is like smoky molasses and I could listen to it all day.
Baby, who is a fully grown man? A baby-man? A man-baby? Who are the real babies here, Post? Why are we babies, and which babies get to have a happy, loving family? And why are these unhinged women abusing that babyman? What the hell is going onI sometimes work with social workers, and I would LOVE to show them this movie. Because I think they would have EFFING.... love this. A bewildering 70s-era gem. You couldn’t find this movie anywhere outside of that particular era, and its weird, hypnotic, absurdius maximus is just something else.Ted Post is probably most familiar to me from magnum force, so the surprise here is enormous, if only because I don't even know what genre to put this movie in 🤔 Maybe a freudian drama with a touch of thriller. Freud himself would have a field day with this one, saying “I told you so” to everyone’s face over and over again, especially Jung’s.Now, the story, without revealing too much... is, Polsky’s written portrayal of a cultural rupture, where perverse repressed desires within the family are constantly churning against one another... becomes an “assessment of modern society” but with a brilliant absurd twist, which is exactly why I’m giving this an extra half-star. But also Post and Polsky portray the man in the film as mentally challenged(?) and submissive. There’s this weird gender anxiety going on here that I don’t entirely understand, and somehow it even manages to evoke a distinctly 70s antifeminist perspective. But that isn’t really the driving force here, because the absurdity takes over to such an extent that the whole thing almost reaches the level of parody, in a horrifying way, of course. So, I don’t know... I recommend it (no I don't). But be prepared for a somewhat grotesque package with very little actual love inside. David Mooney/Manzy(?) calmly 👍 delivers his performance as a baby whose name is Baby (yes), while I sit there with my thumb in my mouth, watching Post abuse everything that could possibly be meant by “love thy family.” 3.5 stars.65/100
