For such an illustrious cast, this material felt tonally pointing in too many directions and dragged on far too long. I wish I cared more about this revolutionary uprising film taking place in Haiti under a despot regime in a leader we never see oppressing freedom of speech and controlling who comes into it's country... wait this feels like something familiar(?);) I think the problem is they institute a love story between a go to man Brown(Richard Burton) and an ambassadors wife Martha Pineda(Elizabeth Taylor) that really take over the ship in a unnecessary way and turn this film rudderless especially knowing that it's from a Graham Greene novel who I find is strong in his material focus but from what I heard that they deviated unfortunately from the story. They underused my Alec Guinness(Major H.O. Jones) and Peter Ustinov(Manual Pineda) was nothing more than a poor sack husband with good intentions. I would not recommend this film except for completists of the many talents in this film cause it just goes on too long and never feels sharp but I did like the scene where Jones finally finds a backbone but really this film is a sad joke.
