The third in the groundbreaking, blockbuster CASH OUT franchise (following 2024's CASH OUT and 2025's HIGH ROLLERS), THE GENTLEMAN THIEF finds master thief Mason Goddard (John Travolta) retired from the game and wallowing in self-pity after breaking up with the FBI agent he fell in love with when she was undercover to nab him (played by Kristin Davis in CASH OUT but replaced by Gina Gershon in HIGH ROLLERS, presumably after an intervention by Sarah Jessica Parker). Mason's perpetual shit magnet younger brother Shawn (Lukas Haas) talks him into a weekend getaway in Miami to take his mind off things, but of course it's a ruse, with Shawn duping a reluctant Mason into yet another heist. This time, it's a $100 million painting in the possession of asshole art collector Hamish Hawkes (entrepreneur and venture capitalist Jas Mathur, who's trying really hard to be Jason Momoa), though they soon discover Hawkes is merely a player in the game and answers to none other than Mason's franchise-long nemesis, ruthless international crime lord and Mexican horror namesake Abel Salazar (Danny Pardo, still doing his Temu Andy Garcia act). Once again directed by former reality TV figure, geezer teaser producer, and Martin Scorsese barnacle Randall Emmett (now going by "Randall Ives Emmett" after directing the first two as simply "Ives"), THE GENTLEMAN THIEF is probably the least egregiously awful of the trilogy, and if there's one nice thing you can say about it, it's marginally more tolerable than HIGH ROLLERS. It's still several notches south of good, as Mason and Shawn put the crew back together--wisecracking Anton (Quavo), hot, snarky hacker Link (Natali Yura), and Caras (Beau Bommarito replacing Swen Temmel, forcing one to contemplate the concept of a backup Swen Temmel), plus new guy Victor (Sam Asghari), and Odessa (Rebecca De Mornay...yes, that Rebecca De Mornay), a former art thief turned legit broker and potential Mason love interest--to go one more round with cigar-sucking Salazar. Not only did Temmel have better things to do than a third CASH OUT, but Noel G also took a pass, apparently finding more respectable offers to play a dude named Hector somewhere else. I guess Asghari is supposed to fill that void, which I assumed would be filled by a certain ringer like annoyingly ubiquitous pop culture presence DJ Khaled, who gets "and DJ Khaled" billing for one pointless scene and then disappears faster than the time he pussed out on HOT ONES. THE GENTLEMAN THIEF is mostly just dull when it isn't being silly, whether it's terrible CGI explosions, pathetic digital muzzle flashes, the constant dizzying drone shot histrionics that Randall Ives Emmett indulges in like he's Garrett Brown the day he invented the Steadicam, the CASH OUT crew resorting to NOW YOU SEE ME magic bullshit, and Salazar ultimately being the dumbest globally-feared crime boss ever (also, Salazar escapes from federal custody in a prologue and yet is free to go about his business unencumbered in Miami--isn't anyone looking for him?). It's hard to contain story arcs this riveting to a mere trilogy, and lucky for us, the door is left open for the return of Travolta, Haas, and maybe even DJ Khaled for...ANOTHER ONE.
