RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOL AQUIACTION! - LUIS BUNUEL: BETWEEN SOCIAL REALISM AND SURREALISMGoing in, I fully expected to be more offended than I actually was. Surprisingly, that never quite happened. There’s a level of nuance here that keeps the film from collapsing into easy straw-man arguments or purely lowbrow attacks on religion. Some characters even present thoughtful, coherent defenses of faith, giving the material more depth than its reputation might suggest. That said, Catholic viewers will likely feel the sharpest sting, which shouldn’t come as a shock. By this point in his career, Buñuel has made it abundantly clear that Catholicism is his favorite target. And make no mistake, there’s still plenty of outright heresy scattered throughout, often tossed off casually, like throwaway provocations meant to poke and prod rather than build toward something deeper.Structurally, the film plays less like a traditional narrative and more like a series of loosely connected vignettes. Some of these work better than others. A few sketches are mildly amusing, while others—like the restaurant sequence—stand out as genuinely interesting. The performances across the board are solid, embracing the film’s absurdity without turning the characters into cartoonish buffoons, which ends up being one of the movie’s more welcome surprises. All in all, this is both the film you’d expect based on its premise and something a bit more curious. Beneath the provocation, it occasionally offers arguments that invite reflection rather than outright dismissal. It leaves you wondering whether Buñuel’s goal was total mockery, genuine debate, or some uneasy mix of the two. As a comedy, it’s serviceable but hardly laugh-out-loud funny—Life of Brian, this is not.ACTION! - LUIS BUNUEL: BETWEEN SOCIAL REALISM AND SURREALISMTODAY SCHEDULEBelle de JourThe Milky WayTristana

Jay D 's Watching4.0

One of those films that highlights the limits in value of a star rating--I mean a gently surreal existential comedy road trip about two hobos taking the Milky Way through time as well as space in pilgrimage hoping to have a spiritual epiphany and being exposed to the warts, heresies, differences of opinion, theological wrinkles and general underbelly of fifteen hundred years of Catholic teaching, culminating in a miracle and sermon by Bunuel's Jesus that points out the limits of faith (and of miracles really) and a suggested conception of....Jesus' opposite? If Mary was the Virgin birth, what does the prostitute's final liason with our two travelers signify? Anyhow, most people would definitely have to be in a specific mood to want to sit down and watch this, regardless of whether or not one's a Bunuel fan (and your mood might be affected by your opinion of Christian dogma, particularly Catholic--Bunuel does seem to have done his research and played fair, though)- but, on the other hand, this sort of thing is like catnip to me, when it comes to highlighting the paradoxes that people struggle to square their own existences with against conceptions of the divine. It's high-concept, sure, but the execution and the gentle casualness of many of the encounters, make it all the more effective.
