literally sat in the car leaving the screening of this movie feeling like i’m reeling. sound design on point, undeniable performances and the transition from charming boyhood to total fucking chaos left me shook. it’s so confusing sometimes to be a BOY.

sometimes i'm so fucking glad that i never have to be young again.
Ok. I am biased. So biased that I had come on here and write my first review (maybe. I don't recall writing others)Up front: my son is one of the boys in this film. I won't say which one. Of course, I'm new to this, so maybe my name is visible and I'm stupid. Either way...As an actor, my son gets auditions. And I am the one who usually reads scripts. Over a year ago, he got the audition for THE PLAGUE. and I started the script. And I did not put it down. And I declared to anyone who would listen to my ramblings that this might be the best script I have ever read. (Of an un produced film of course)I made my (then 12 year old) son read it. He loved it. We were so honored when we got a call from his agent. And filming in Romania was a dream. Now to review (unbiased of course) the film. It is not at all what I read. The words are almost exactly the same. But what Charlie did visually and with the pacing and with the sound design and with his actors was a true cinematic achievement. Haifa stood on back of my neck in the first minute when we see the most beautiful opening shot of bodies dropping into an abyss of a swimming pool. The sound design in that sequence is epic. Must be said, this movie is probably not for everyone. I can imagine a lot of people not getting it. But more importantly, I imagine a lot of people (who may or may not be the "audience" for this film) really walk away shaken and moved with feelings about their own childhood. I am hopeful that this film gets seen by as many as possible. And not only because of my connection and my son's performance. I hope it gets seen because it's an important piece of work about bullying and puberty and anxiety. And it's a first feature in ( what I will assume to be) a long and distinguished career for Charlie Polinger.
