Chicago Critics Film Festival closing night film!!Joe Swanberg is back! All of us Swanberg superfans (there’s at least 3 of us, right?) can rejoice. The characters have aged but the story and structure remains the same as Swanberg takes an autobiographical, semi-improvisational approach to relationships where folks are constantly making the wrong choices and trying desperately to backpedal, often to great comedic effect. Jake Johnson is always reliable in this position and Dakota Fanning and Cory Michael Smith and (somewhat shockingly) even Debby Ryan take to the distinct Swanberg dialogue beats naturally. At first I was bummed this wasn’t set in Chicago, but it showcases Anchorage beautifully and that’s a really cool location for a film.Swanberg and Smith provided a great, informative, laidback and humorous Q&A after the film. I didn’t get to meet Swanberg but Cory Michael Smith did ask me where the bar was, which is my new claim to fame.
